Concerned about the innocent people of Gaza and southern Lebanon?
If you really want to make a difference, and you are not directly politically, financially or physically able to, you will be limited to influencing people, so be careful not to alienate them.
The only legal avenues currently open to you are registered and approved protests. Studies are unambiguous. Protesting, unless it is demonstrating a clear majority of the population do not work. Politicians are critically aware that there will always be a selection of the population that will not agree with any given subject. Ask yourself this question: do you personally like being disrupted or shouted at?
Be informed. If you are not aware of the turbid history of the middle east, do some reading, listen to both sides of the story. Don't simply repeat catchphrases, some of these have highly offensive hidden meanings.
If you respect and value international law and the freedoms western countries offer, you should make the effort to understand who else respects those and who does not. Criminals do not respect rules because they contravene their aspirations, the same goes for certain regimes and governments.
Territory and ethnic backgrounds aside, The Gaza conflict is a war of values. Terrorism is not, and never will be an acceptable form of protest. The death of innocent civilians is never acceptable. Remember there are innocent people on both sides that don't want this conflict.
We should accept that the bad actors have their support bases in their respected populations. It’s these people who need to be influenced and empowered.
A lot of good people are calling for a two-state solution and the resignation of the Netanyahu government. Neither of these things are practical or likely to happen. Not even the US government has jurisdiction, let alone your employer or educator. The conflict is occurring inside Israeli controlled borders and the attack on the 7th of Oct makes the counter offensive justified under international law.
When demanding a ceasefire, make sure you include the demand that Hamas surrender and release the Israeli hostages. Does that sound reasonable? Israel is a country that supports education for women and tolerance for all religions. You cannot say the same about Iran, the sponsor of Hamas, Hezbollah.
